MISPLACED PRIORITIES

SOME NIGERIANS NOW THINK WITH THEIR LEGS AND NOT THEIR HEADS

The news of the final announcement of the winner of the Big Brother Naija television show often called ‘BBN’ floods several social media platforms. Well, the television show this season has come and gone leaving millions of viewers with mixed reactions. To many, it appears to have been a ‘great show’ after remaining glued to the television and following its updates on social media platforms.

I beg to ask what valuable and positive lessons have this group of viewers learnt thus far. Is it Immorality and outward visibility/show of cultural decadence? Has it been able to help the youths on the streets? Has it improved the situation of things in the society or nation?

Many well thinking Nigerians have been able to use their heads in the right direction and raise comments that are worthy of applause. These comments are nothing but blunt truths and practical facts. Some of these comments are stated below:

·         “See the Latest Common Madness
Big Brother Africa - N48m
Big Brother Nigeria – N25m
Maltina Dance All – N10m
MTN Project Fame – N7.5m + SUV
Etisalat’s Nigeria Idol – N5m + a multimillion naira contract
GLO Naija Sings – N5m + SUV
Gulder Ultimate Search - N10m + SUV + Endorsement

BUT
Cowbell Mathematics Competition – N100,000
Lagos Spelling Bee – N50k
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, you can hardly go beyond N250,000

Later they’ll say ACADEMICS is the key….while the padlock has been changed to ENTERTAINMENT…”

·         “Now I know the future of Nigeria is at stake. Right now, my timeline is filled with BBN, wondering when the best graduating student of any university will be this popular…..Ignoramus promoting immoralities
#my_perspective”

·         “At a point, BBN recorded a total of about 11million votes. Now, 1 vote costs N30 bringing the money recovered to amount to about N330million. This is enough to settle the prizes of the winners of the show. Not to mention help from sponsors and other media of money generation. Nothing but business! What makes it disheartening is the fact that it is channeled in the wrong direction”

·         “Millions of Nigerians can afford to spend money to vote for their favorite contestants on BBN to keep them in the house and ensure they win (benefits that will never get to them). Yet they seem to lack the same amount to help fellow Nigerians in need of medical treatments gulping millions of Naira! All that is needed is simple calculation! Just 1 million ‘N30 BBN voters’ can generate 30 million naira needed to help a Nigerian in need of a kidney transplant to save his/her life. It’s sad to see this kind of broadcast made on TV for several days. Your N30 can help save a life!”

·         “If only there could be an educating version of this programme. If only they could house some intelligent people in like manner and make them compete for similar prizes. But no! Our people do not encourage sanity. Our society promotes evil over good, indecency over decency, immorality over morality, and ungodliness over godliness.”

·         “What foundation are we laying for coming generations? What message of hope and legacy are we leaving behind? If we continue like this, it appears we are going to pass immorality as a legacy to the next generation. Are we not losing our minds?”

Should we continue to encourage television shows without any positive influence or impact on the lives of millions of television viewers in Nigeria? My sincere answer is no! We need to wake up!

This situation speaks of nothing other than a sorry case of misplaced priorities! It’s a scenario of confusion!  It simply makes us appear foolish!

Instead of focusing on ways by which we can solve problems in our society and nation at large, we are compounding our woes by making immorality appear as an acceptable cultural behavior.

I’m not saying ‘no’ to television shows. Don’t get me wrong.  Comment 1 has a number of them with positive influence on the lives of individuals (with regards to talent and skills development), families and communities. I’m saying a BIG NO to visionless and negative TV shows!

#AffectMediaForGood!

Let’s wake up!

It’s time to think with our heads and not our legs!
